Soror
Faye Lewis is President and owner of CSA Consulting Group, a consulting firm
that offers professional development services to educators in New Jersey
school districts. CSA Consulting Group provides teachers with the
necessary tools and resources to cultivate their professional growth and
enhance the quality of their instruction.
In May 2006, Soror Faye decided to branch
out with her own business after determining that she needed the flexibility
to care for her young children and family without having to ask permission
to take time off. Additionally, as an experienced educator, she realized
that her earning potential, as well as the ability to make her own choices
would be greater if she worked independently. Armed with faith and
determination, she hasn’t looked back since and says the reward of being an
entrepreneur is having the freedom to make your own decisions.
Today, Soror Faye continues to work on
growing her business, and affirms that she encountered many challenges when
she first started. “I didn’t have a written plan, and the goals that I did
set were idealistic”, says Soror Faye. “I learned how important it is to
plan and use the free resources that are available to small businesses, such
as the SBA (Small Business Association). Additionally, I paid too much money
to contractors when I could have done the work myself.” She says there will
always be challenges and obstacles to overcome and admits to still working
on some of hers.
Soror Faye shares the following advice
for aspiring entrepreneurs: Do your homework, speak to people who are doing
what you aspire to do, have a written plan, research the market, and don’t
be too proud to ask for help.
